Hello Running Friends!
This weekend will be the first race of the 2020-2021 Daytona Race Series. We hope you will support a long time member of the DRS by entering the Great Candy Race 5k or Quarter Marathon (6.55 miles)
This race (formerly Ed Root 5k/10k) is presented by the City of New Smyrna Beach Parks and Rec Dept, and is scheduled for 8am Saturday October 10 at Clancy’s Cantina, 301 Flagler Ave. Upon registering, runners will choose a corral starting time. Runners will start at 10 second intervals, and will be scored based upon their “net” computer chip time (the time the runner crosses the start line mat until the runner crosses the finish line mat). For more race information and to register: Great Candy 5k & Quarter Marathon (160 have registered in the past 10 days) ON-LINE REGISTRATION CLOSES AT MIDNIGHT TONIGHT) Runners may also register and pick up their packets Friday October 9 from 1PM – 5PM at the Babe James Center, 201 N. Myrtle Ave, NSB. Registration and packet pick up will also be available race morning beginning at 630 am at the race site.
We have been in contact with several of the race directors, and here is the latest:
The following 3 races are optimistically working closely with their local governments to secure a race permit:
Operation Changing Lives 5k - Ponce Inlet - November 21
Chuck Strasser Candy Cane 5k – Ormond Beach – November 28
Holiday Bridge Challenge 5k – Ormond Beach – December 19
We are optimistic on having 2 other races in February, and possibly adding some new races to the series in the spring, but with the pandemic still at hand, details and decisions will come later.
Some of the other DRS races not occurring “in person” this year include:
South Daytona 5k – September – cancelled for 2020
19th Annual Halifax - Health Hospice 5k - VIRTUAL Oct 18 - Nov 15
36th Annual John Boyle Thanksgiving Day Virtual Races: 10 Mile & 5k – Registration for Virtual races opening soon
RULES FOR 2020 – 2021:
We will not have 10 races in the series this year. Each race contributes financially to the series in order for us to offer the year end trophies and finisher medals.
We have added the above to the RULES at the DRS website
We will continue to update the Local Race Calendar weekly to point out other local races of interest. For now, we are expanding the “local” area to include live races of potential interest in cities as far away as Cocoa Beach, Orlando, and Jacksonville.
Did you know that we have put on a 5 race Youth 1 Mile Running Series at Flagler Palm Coast High School track in conjunction with Flagler PAL for the past 2 years? We have permission to go ahead with the 2020-2021 series. The 1 Mile Races will be held between December 5, 2020 and January 16, 2021, and are open to Grade levels 4 thru 12. Runners do not need to live in Flagler County or attend Flagler County schools. FPC is located at 5500 FL-100 E, Palm Coast, about 12 miles from Destination Daytona. For details: RunFlagler.org
Hope to see you October 10th!
